In the tropical regions of the north, the chloropteran macaw frequents rainforests which are in principle never invaded by water. In this part of its range, it avoids marshy areas and woodlands that are periodically flooded, leaving this kind of wet habitat to its close cousin, the Blue Macaw. In the south and east of its range, it occupies more wooded areas, including deciduous or tunnelling forests along rivers. It willingly penetrates the expanses of brush. Its presence depends very much on the existence of large trees and rocky cliffs that are great purveyors of nesting sites. On the other hand, the chloropteran macaw voluntarily moves away from towns, villages and all inhabited places, because it is the victim of intensive hunting and is often captured for the trade of aviary birds. This bird lives mostly below 1000 meters. Locally, it can climb up to 1400 m in Venezuela
