This bird, one of the most mysterious members of the family of phasianids, lives exclusively in the island of Borneo for the giant argus of Gray, and for the type breed in the Malay Peninsula and in Sumatra where it stands in the lowland jungles and on the lower parts of the foothills of the mountains. It is not found near the coast, but only in the hard-to-reach interior of the island. According to some naturalists, the argus of Borneo would not be rare in old forests, but would only inhabit forests regenerated after a cutting of wood in small numbers. It is truly a primitive jungle bird, intensely shaded.
