This exceptionals beautifuls skins offers a wide range of plumage unrivalled in fly-tying.
There are some classic salmon flies that specifically call for Mandarin.
One such pattern is The Mandarin Drake that uses what are often referred to as the “sails” on the back of the bird.
These feathers have long fibers with white tips and are used similar to strips wing spey flies.
There are the much sought after barred lemon breast feathers, with their fine black and light tan markings, the black and white barred tip flank feathers, when used as cheeks, so much a part of traditional Salmon tying.
Included on the breast are the white fan plumes for classic Royal Coachman dressing.
There is much more on this skin for the inventive fly-tyer, so far virtually unexplored.
Mandarin is similar to the Wood Duck, but has longer fibers, finer barring and smaller white bars. The uses certainly overlap and one can be exchanged for the other.
